Abstract:

Scour analyses were prepared for ten bridges and causeways in and around Mobile Bay on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. Interactions between riverine floods on the Mobile River and tidal storm surges on Mobile Bay create a complex hydraulic environment. Determination of critical scour events for individual bridges requires examination of both riverine and tidal surge events. Two dimensional modeling was used to simulate the effects of riverine and tidal storm events. Scour analyses were performed under the direction of the Alabama Department of Transportation.
