Abstract:

Modifications of J.J. Leendertse's water-quality model for improving calculations of dissolved oxygen concentrations in Jamaica Bay, New York, are discussed. Changes to the dissolved oxygen (DO) kinetics include addition of the effects of sediment oxygen demand, photosynthesis, respiration, nitrification and denitrification. Extensive simulations for calibration of advective (hydrodynamic) and dispersive (conservative constituent) components of the DO model are reported. These simulations show good performance of the model to reproduce real data of sea level, current velocity and salinity. Recent DO simulations with the updated kinetics show the model also reproduces adequately observed DO data.
