Abstract:

At least three driving forces in U. S. construction markets indicate the increasing importance of advanced technology: the technical complexity of constructed facilities is increasing; owners faced with increasing international competition are demanding more of designers and constructors; and foreign competitors are more involved. One step in preparing for changes from these forces is to formulate possible strategies for using advanced technology to gain competitive advantage in construction firms. The paper describes competition in the construction industry and proposes strategies for developing advanced construction technology and using it to gain competitive advantage.
