Abstract:

A method is presented for synthesizing the real modes of substructures to obtain the complex modes of the combined structure. These complex modes properly include the nonclassical damping effects which may be present in the combined structure. In the synthesis process, the modes obtained for the free or fixed boundary conditions of the substructures can be used. The method does not need a conventional solution of the eigenvalue problem which is inevitably required in the current mode synthesis approaches. Rather, the eigenvalues are obtained as the solution of characteristic equations defined in closed form. For a given eigenvalue, the corresponding eigenvector can be calculated by simple closed form expressions without solving any simultaneous equations.
