Abstract:

Dynamic forces on a vibrating submerged solid cylinder in both closed and open-top rectangular containers are evaluated. The submerged cylinder is attached to the base of a dynamically-excited tank by a spring of finite and infinite stiffnesses in the horizontal and the vertical directions, respectively. The distribution of impulsive and convective accelerations of the liquid in a vibrating tank without the submerged solid is presented. The equation of motion of the oscillating cylinder in the vibrating container is formulated, and the effective dynamic force on the submerged structure is defined.
