Abstract:

The history of European waste water management is briefly reviewed. Legal aspects of waste water management are presented by examples from Germany and Switzerland. International agreements on the river Rhine and lake Constance are discussed. Case studies of alternative systems are presented for the waste water treatment plant in Zurich, deep well disposal of brine solutions in France, and treatment of an entire river in Germany. Trends in pollution control policy, technology, and management are outlined.
