Abstract:

A Decision Support System (DSS) for fitting stage-discharge (S-D) relations is being developed by the University of Manitoba, Facility for Intelligent Decision Support, for Environment Canada's hydrometric program. The process of developing and applying stage-discharge relationships has been documented, the DSS framework established, and a number of expert 'rules' were developed and evaluated. The system provides a means for classifying a gauging station, its respective hydraulic control and the overall reach in question. The process of developing curves, modifying curves, using curves and extrapolation beyond established curves is dependant upon the classification, and the stage-discharge decision support system (SDDSS) provides an environment to perform all tasks whether a classification of stable or non-stable is reached. The end result of providing the analysis for stage-discharge rating curves is to formalize and standardize the analysis using hydraulic and hydrologic reasoning and principals.
