The Von Roll Monorail at Merry Hill, U.K.

by Paul Truelove, Aston Univ, Birmingham, United Kingdom,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Automated People Movers IV

Abstract:

In June 1991 a Von Roll monorail commenced operations at the privately developed Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the U.K. The paper describes the application of the Von Roll monorail to the site, and the design problems following upon the decision to go ahead. The system was wholly privately financed. It is 1.8 km in length, with 4 stations, and is the first application of the Von Roll Mark III in Europe. The paper discusses the transport implications of the creation of the second largest retail centre in the country in a location chosen without regard to the pre-existing major road pattern.
