Abstract:

A new method for discretization of random fields (representation in terms of random variables) is introduced based on the principle of optimal linear estimation theory. The method is more efficient than other existing methods; i.e., for the same level of accuracy it requires a smaller number of random variables to describe the field. The method is particularly relevant for application in stochastic finite element problems.
