Abstract:

A 1:60 undistorted mobile bed model of the Nile River in the vicinity of Esna Barrage was constructed at the Hydraulics and Sediment Research Institute to test rip-rap protection of the cofferdam for the new Esna Barrage and Power Plant Project. The cofferdam contracted a river width of 50%. The main purpose of the present study was to check the rip-rap design and stability. The model indicated that significant changes could be made in the proposed design. The rip-rap size was reduced from 200-700 mm to 40-150 mm in some locations. The rip-rap on river bank opposite to the cofferdam was decreased by 2500 meters. The prototype cofferdam has been built according to model results and one high discharge had occurred. There was no observed movement of the rip-rap. Thus a significant reduction of the cost associated with construction of the cofferdam was achieved based on the hydraulic model tests.
