Improved Intake Design for Downstream Migrating Fish at Hydropower Plants

Abstract:

Fish guidance efficiency of screens is a function of the submergence of a hydropower intake. The submergence of an intake can be reduced through the use of intake extensions or guides which smooth intake flow, reduce parallel and vortex flows, causing the entire fish screen to intercept more of the surface flow. Turbine Intake Extensions or Guides can increase the fish guidance efficiency of the screens in deep submerged intakes.
