Abstract:

A comprehensive data set representing September 1983 conditions on the Chesapeake Bay has been assembled and is proposed as a possible data set for inclusion in the work of the ASCE Task Committee, 'Verification of Three-Dimensional Numerical Free-Surface Hydrodynamic Models.' The data set contains all required boundary conditions, initial salinity and temperature fields and bottom bathymetry on a given numerical grid, current meter data at three interior stations, and water levels at five interior stations. The data set should be of aid in validating the ability of a three-dimensional model to simulate the effects of a temperature inversion and wind mixing on the motion of partially stratified water bodies.
