Abstract:

In the present paper, mixture considerations for producing high performance cement-based composites are discussed. Effects of different factors such as grain size and fiber reinforcement on the properties of the composite are presented. It was found that by using tougher and smaller sized aggregates, one can improve the strength and fracture toughness of a cement-based composite. However, a more effective way in further improving the overall performance of a cement-based composite still lies on micro-reinforcement such as fibers. Possible mechanisms that enhance the toughness and strength due to the existence of fibers are also discussed.
