Abstract:

Field investigation for leachate flow was done for the Fresh Kills landfill at Staten Island, New York. The leachate monitoring program included data collection from the field for a six month period using piezometers and monitoring wells. The piezometers and monitoring wells were located in and around the landfill. The leachate mound elevation data were collected and analyzed to obtain the gradient for leachate flow. The leachate head contours were drawn to define the leachate mound and to represent the leachate flow field. The field scale analysis was accomplished by computing the lateral flow toward the perimeter and the vertical flow through the bottom clay, assuming a steady state flow condition.
