Abstract:

As design concept for a high-level waste (HLW) final repository the emplacement of reprocessing wastes and spent fuel elements of different types in a common repository is being studied in Germany within the framework of the R&D project 'System Analysis Dual-Purpose Repository'. The objectives of this system analysis are on the one side to analyze the technical feasibility of different repository conceptual designs as well as on the other side, for several feasible repository concept variants, to perform a detailed comparison and evaluation of the corresponding advantages and disadvantages. This paper displays some results of the temperature calculations that have been performed for the system analysis. The calculations include important features, as for instance the detailed modelling of the repository layout considering every heat source as a discrete one as well as the 50 years lasting waste emplacement procedure. The results point out the necessity of taking the mentioned features into account because of its marked influence on the temperature field.
