Abstract:

In June 1986 Zwag Zschokke Wartmann Ltd received the order from Hidroelectrica Espanola S.A. in Madrid, Spain for the design and model testing of 5 radial gates on the 'El Naranjero' Dam in Spain. The dam, located approx 30 miles south west of Valencia, contains an artificial lake with a normal water level of 240 m (780 ft) above sea level. As this lake is connected to another lake in the same river and because the owner wanted full automatic control, the gates had to be operated without any operational restrictions. This paper discusses design features of the gates, operational requirements, and gate model testing, including flow induced vibrations, static and dynamic force measurements, and others.
