Abstract:

The 1990 Forum Proceedings is a collection of papers that were written to provide a basis for deliberation and conclusions at the ASCE 1990 National Forum on Education and Continuing Development for the Civil Engineer, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 17-20, 1990. They address major areas of interest and concern to the future of civil engineering education. The overall theme of the forum - Setting the Agenda - is reflected in the writings so as to generate recommendations for how educators, practitioners, and the American Society of Civil Engineers can influence education for the next decade and into the twenty-first century. Curricula and accreditation; continuing education; design creativity and safety; ethics, communications and legal aspects; student quality and quantity; career guidance; computers; and management are several of the topics discussed. In addition, educational aspects of technical specialty areas, such as construction, structures & mechanics, and environmental engineering are covered.
