Abstract:

The presence of joints in a rock mass may cause local instability of the tunnel support and its effect on safety should be included in design. Because of significant uncertainties in the design variables, a conventional deterministic analysis may not be adequate. A probabilistic method is proposed to estimate the reliability of the tunnel support, accounting for the variations in the geometric configuration of the joint system and the properties of the rock and support material.
