Model Study of New Madrid Pumping Station

by James R. Leech, US Army Corps of Engineers, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

The proposed pumping station on the New Madrid Floodway consisted of a draft tube type sump design (referred to as a formed suction inlet) to eliminate swirl and provide a more uniform flow distribution to the pump impeller. The formed suction inlet (FSI) has an advantage over conventional rectangular sumps by having a constantly decreasing cross-sectional area, which causes the flow to accelerate, eliminating vortices caused by geometry.
