Abstract:

The first objective of this methodology is to provide a feasible and practical tool to identify the potentialities of the coastal zone. The coastal environment constitutes a fragile, little known and complex ecosystem that is an important resource for most nations. The protection of these areas through a balanced analysis between conservation, rational use of coastal resources, and living standards, is also an objective of this methodology. The second objective is to provide a democrat planning of coastal zone uses. A multidisciplinary group constituted by professors, specialists, and students developed a research during the period between 1983 and 1985, with the objective of establishing a methodology of coastal zone planning. An interdisciplinary study was developed to define the environmental information that should be obtained to select coastal areas to be planned. This paper discusses the proposed methodology and its application to the sepetiba Bay area in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
