Abstract:

A new kind of damper, Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) relying upon motion of, shallow liquid in a rigid container for absorbing and dissipating the vibrations energy is explained. The performance of a TLD mounted on a structural model subjected to an external force is experimentally investigated. A nonlinear formulation of liquid inside TLD is developed based on 'shallow water wave' theory and a TLD-Structure Interaction model is proposed. Good agreement is found between the experiment and the theory. Effectiveness of TLD in a existing tower structures is also explained.
