Abstract:

Tripping (lateral-torsional buckling) of symmetrical or asymmetrical plate stiffeners can be analyzed by using differential equations or energy formulation. An analytical study is reported on the tripping behavior and strength of asymmetrical plate stiffeners. Two neighboring stiffeners were considered as a typical unit from a wide stiffened plate, and ten deformation functions were used in the energy formulation: three per stiffener and four for the plate. Distortion of the stiffener cross section, initial imperfections, and buckling of the plate were considered. Post-buckling of the plate was included through the effective width. Three loading cases were studied: axial load and axial load in combination with transverse loading in either direction (plate-side or stiffener-side).
