Abstract:

The behaviour of cross-bracing comprising struts and ties connected at their cross-over joints in lattice towers is subject to some uncertainty. It is affected significantly by taper and relative stiffness of the main legs, inclination of the bracing and eccentricity of the bolted connections. The relative influence of these effects also varies with the slenderness ratio of the bracing. This study assesses the theoretical contribution of each factor and compares these predictions with the results of tests and formulae in design codes.
