Abstract:

Techniques for determining the size of lateral bracing members in multi-story steel buildings are presented and discussed. Because the design of such bracing is usually controlled by deflection considerations, typical strength sizing methods are not applicable. The sizing methods presented are based on the LaGrange Multiplier technique which will result in the minimum volume structure for a given deflection limit for a statistically determine structure.
