Abstract:

This paper briefly reviews various factors contributing to the poor performance occasionally observed in concentrically braced steel frame structures during recent earthquakes. Several alternative systems for improving this behavior are described for chevron (K) braced frames. The relative effectiveness of these variants is evaluated on the basis of results of analytical simulations. Guidelines for the design of such frames are identified from these studies.
