Abstract:

The Valdesia reservoir system, located on the Nizao River in the Dominican Republic, is designed to provide irrigation water to the Nizao project areas and hydroelectric energy to the national power network. The system consists of a main reservoir, concrete dam and a spillway, a diversion and a spillway system a short distance downstream. This paper presents the application of state-of-the-art hydrologic techniques to investigate the flood control operation of the Valdesia system which experiences floods due to local weather phenomena and also extreme floods due to Atlantic tropical cyclones.
