Abstract:

A real time modeling system has been developed to schedule hydropower operations in order to comply with discharge permit requirements at a downstream fossil steam plant. The modeling system provides an interactive and efficient solution to complicated and highly unsteady flow conditions along a 44-mile river reach. Installation of the modeling system at the Tennessee Valley Authority Power Control Center and application of the model on a real time basis incorporates environmental constraints into the daily scheduling of hydropower and reservoir operations.
