Abstract:

A methodology for deriving time averaged mass transport equations for estuaries having weakly nonlinear long wave dynamics is presented. A 2D in-plane advection-dispersion equation for weak vertical stratification and a 3D advection-diffusion equation for strong vertical stratification are derived. Advective transport in both equations is by first order Lagrangian mean or time averaged velocities. Aspects of time series analysis and numerical approximation relevant to the computation of the Lagrangian velocities are discussed.
