Abstract:

Break failure patterns are investigated by applying a new methodology based on Proportional hazards and Poisson-type models. Application on two water distribution systems of North-Eastern U. S. resulted in the derivation of quantitative models for estimating failure probabilities of individual pipes. It is shown how those models can be used for making optimal replacement and rehabilitation decisions and a comparison is made with currently applied maintenance strategies.
