Abstract:
During a zone change hearing in connection with site selection for a new landfill near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, some honest communication overcame opposition by the residents. Points for engineers to remember when faced with similar opposition: have the facts straight and be technically accurate; do not underestimate the opponents; be honest; communicate, letting the public vent their anger and frustration. Slide shows and other visual aids can help.
