Coastal Wetland Restoration — Developers Challenge

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '85

Abstract:

National policy asks protection of wetlands regardless of condition and with no provision to return them to functional condition. Neither state nor federal agencies budget for capital improvement funds for restoration. This policy vacuum is being filled by private initiative. Under the current regulatory regime, coastal developers are unlikely to get permits for shoreside developments unless they provide 'mitigation' for any wetlands that are altered.
