Abstract:

Low friction and adfreeze coatings have proven to be cost effective in reducing skin friction on icebreaker hulls. Of the two coatings acceptable for this service, the 100% polyurethanes have proven their superiority in reducing frictional resistance and adfreezing. State of the art application procedures require careful monitoring of environmental conditions, substrate and equipment in order to achieve the optimum adhesion required in high abrasion ice service.
