Abstract:

An equation is given to determine if scour holes will beach and widen excessively. For nonbeaching scour holes, dimensionless equations are given for the progression of scour with time and for the design of plunge pool energy dissipators for cantilevered pipe spillway outlets covering a range of discharges, pipe sizes, pipe heights, and bed material or riprap sizes. These equations are found to yield moderately conservative plunge pool sizes. Finally, the effect of a nonerodible layer on plunge pool dimensions is found to be minimal.
