Abstract:

This paper addresses trends in computer-aided productivity tools for Civil Engineers in the eighties. Certain aspects of the past history, present status, and future of CAD/CAM and CAE are covered. Knowledge-based expert systems, artificial intelligence, integrated relational project databases, solids modeling, 32-bit supermicrocomputers, intelligent graphic display processors with display lists are included. A few examples of currently available applications are reviewed. This paper concludes with a discussion of what Civil Engineers can expect to see in productivity tools by the end of the decade.
