Abstract:

Since the late 1970's, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has had the capability to automatically collect trip origin and destination data from its faregates. This data acquisition system (DAS) has given BART an unparalleled capability to monitor its patronage. This article describes BART's use of DAS, the previous patronage reporting system, and how this system has been enhanced by the use of microcomputers.
