Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the new frontiers for microcomputers in transportation. There are AI applications emerging in all areas from planning to maintenance. This paper discusses the concepts of AI and offers some examples of applications. Since expert systems are the most common type of AI application, the elements of an expert system are described in more detail. To illustrate the idea of expert systems, a simplistic example involving a common traffic engineering problem is presented.
