Abstract:

This proceedings, Ports '98, is a collection of the technical papers presented at the Ports '98 conference held in March 1998 in Long Beach, California. Initiated in 1977, this conference is the eighth in a series and was co-sponsored by the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the U.S. Section of the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses (PIANC). Authors, although predominately from the United States, are also from numerous international locations including Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Canada, Israel and Venezuela. Paper topics are varied and include such subjects as: 1) international terminals; 2) port and terminal planning; 3) container and marine terminals; 4) intermodal links; 5) innovate project delivery; 6) geotechnical engineering and foundations; 7) repair and rehabilitation of waterfront structures; 8) cranes and shiploading systems; 9) pile inspection and maintenance; 10) small craft harbors and recreational piers; 11) composite technology; 12) vessel moorings; 13) environmental issues; 14) coastal engineering; 15) dredging; 16) breakwaters; 17) military facilities; and 18) waterways and locks. These papers provide a glimpse to the reader of port engineering issues present and future by introducing them to technically advanced and innovative information that can be used by the port industry into the next century.
