Abstract:

Geomembranes are an important part of landfill cap design. However not all geomembrane liners are created equal, and it's best to know what a liner is made of before specifying it on a project. Even though they're usually made from the same materials, namely soil, clay and a geomembrane liner, landfill closure caps are usually very different from their base liners because they pose additional design challenges, such as steeply sloped sides and unanticipated settlement as wastes decompose. These factors can impose considerable stresses on a geomembrane, and it is important to consider how the properties of a membrane can make it an effective, or ineffective, part of the design.
