Abstract:

As an alternate to designing bridge abutments to withstand the development of the full scour prism predicted by equations currently available for estimating abutment scour, FHWA recommends that riprap and guide banks be used to protect an abutment from failure. This paper presents design considerations and a design approach, in SI units, for designing guide banks to protect bridge abutments.
