Abstract:

The Three Gorges Project of China, the world.s largest single water resources project, was officially begun its construction in December 1994. The project involves a massive reservoir population relocation. At the normal pool level, the number of people to be relocated will reach 1.13 million by 2009 when the project is completed. An investment oriented development relocation policy has been adopted by the project authority. This policy was tested with an experimental program at selected locations in the project area in 1985 through 1993, and it has been implemented since 1994.
