Abstract:

This paper briefly summarizes 190 measured pier-scour depths collected dur ing 1942?94 at 22 selected bridges in Mississippi and presents an envelope-curve equation for the data. The envelope-curve equation was developed by relating pier-scour depth divided by normal pier width to approach-flow depth divided by nor mal pier width. Measured pier-scour depths were compared to pier-scour depths predicted by the pier-scour equation currently recommended in the Federal High way Administration Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 18 and pier-scour depths predicted by the envelope-curve equation.
