Abstract:

Scour at relatively wide piers in shallow water is not explicitly accounted for in the current HEC-18 scour equation. The scour estimated for this case is often overpredicted. In this paper, a modification or correction factor for currently used scour equations is presented to account for the effect of scour at wide piers. A comparison of these factors is provided based on field data. Use of the correction factors can assist in estimating scour at bridges, particularly in coastal areas where pier widths tend to be shallow relative to flow depths.
