Abstract:

Prototype scour monitoring instruments were installed on a sloping abutment as part of a research project to develop scour instrumentation. Abutment installations create new and sometimes more difficult problems for scour monitoring instruments because of the complex flow patterns, the location of the scour and, in the case of spill-through abutments, the slope of the abutment face. Favorable results were obtained from two scour instruments that have been used successfully used at pier installations.
