Abstract: This Committee report, Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Technology: International Experience, was prepared by the Task Committee on Pumped Storage, Energy Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Because of the varied functions that a pumped storage project can provide to an electric system, interest in pumped storage is growing throughout the world. Pumped storage continues to be a valuable and reliable generating resource despite a changing electric generation mix, substantial changes in generation fuel prices, and major advancements in gas turbine technology. This report describes the pumped storage industry in several regions of the world that have heavy concentrations of pumped storage projects. These include Japan, Western Europe, and separately, Great Britain. In addition, pumped storage projects located in other countries were selected because of their unique and interesting features. The presentation of each pumped storage project includes a description of the project and its geologic setting, a list of special features, a list of references, a tabulation of the project and equipment data, and drawings of the project layout and other aspects.
