Abstract:

Toe scour protection is an important element in bank protection projects because undermining by scour at the toe is one of the major causes of failure of bank protection. Existing toe protection practices are reviewed and summarized. Two methods of toe scour protection, launchable riprap and weighted fabric aprons, were tested in physical models. The launchable riprap tests evaluated toe performance as a function of shape, rock size, scour magnitude, and presence of filter fabric. Fabric aprons used as toe protection were tested to determine performance for various placement configurations.
