Abstract:

This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests performed on clear water scour around circular and rectangular cross section bridge piers, embedded in a non-uniform coarse sediment bed. Under these conditions the scour hole size depends both on the pier cross section geometry and on the pavement layer sediment diameter formed on the bed surface inside the scour hole, in addition to the flow characteristics. This phenomenon typically occurs in steep well graded gravel bed mountain rivers where the upper bed layer sediment size changes with the imposed flow conditions.
