Abstract:

This article introduces the Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) for the solution of 2-D overland flow problems. The CVFEM integrates the advantages of both Finite Element (FE) and Integrated Finite Difference (IFD) methods. More in detail the advantages of the CVFEM can be summarized as a better physical interpretation of results as well as a reduction in the unknowns of the problem to be solved combined with a more effective representation of the gradients which is particularly important in overland flow problems. In this paper the derivation of the algorithm is presented and a number of numerical problems are discussed. After the description of the proposed method, a test is described which was carried out in order to verify the obtained results with respect to a theoretical solution.
