Abstract:

This proceedings, Modelling of Flood Propagation Over Initially Dry Area, contains papers presented at the Specialty conference co-sponsored by ASCE-CNR/GNDCI-ENEL spa and held in Milan, Italy, June 29 - July 1, 1994. The goal of the conference was to establish the state of the art in mathematical modelling of flood propagation over initially dry areas. The need for reliable evaluation tools of flood risk potential is paramount both in developed and developing countries. Developed areas need to study the reliability of their defense works while developing countries can use the mathematical models to plan their development in order to avoid future high risk situations. Although initially focused on the use of two-dimensional modelling of flood propagation, the subjects of the papers were broadened to include related topics such as geographical information systems. This proceedings presents papers covering 1) Theoretical and numerical aspects of flood modelling; 2) computational and practical aspects of modelling such as the use of GIS; 3) model verification against laboratory and field measurements; and 4) dynamics of sediment transport. This volume provide valuable information to engineers, hydrologists and other technical personnel dealing with flood risk analysis and protection against floods.
