Abstract:

The software most widely used in engineering practice as well as for general purposes consists of word processors, spreadsheets, and databases, and these are useful for settlement analysis as well. There are several systems for processing data from borings and entering the results in databases. These, when combined with Geographical Information Systems, provide engineers with powerful tools for performing their first task - understanding the soil profile. Recently some software has also become commercially available for performing conventional settlement analysis; two packages in particular are described briefly.
