Abstract:

Measured settlement of deep compacted engineered fills from a single site were summarized and compared to data from other sites. The data indicate that the rate and magnitude of movement of compacted (unsaturated) fills are dependent on thickness of fill, moisture added during the life of the fill and the type of soil. These ground deformation data should assist other engineers in planning construction on deep compacted fills. The data presented include total settlements and settlement rates for compacted engineered fills up to 36 meters thick.
